Freddie's puppies are born!

Late last night in Järbo, Sweden, Freja and Freddie's puppies were born! Weighing 276-308g, 2 boys and 3 girls were born. To my knowledge, all the girls are spoken for, but a male may still be available.

The 3 girls and 1 boy waiting for their little brother to be born

The pups come from great French, German, and Swedish hunting lines:

We are excited to watch Freddie's pups grow and develop and will continue to update as the weeks progress. <3

Wirehaired Puppies expected October 13th!

Although it is still a bit early, day 26, we are cautiously optimistic that Freddie and Freja had a successful rendezvous. Freja is acting very pregnant, complete with "morning sickness" and extreme klingy-ness to her owner. It will be another couple of weeks before I can post belly pictures, but the expected due date of the pups is October 13th.

Below is a link to Skogsvetten's blog where you can read about how Freja's pregnancy is going (in Swedish).Freja's Pregnancy Update

This litter has a great combination of hunting lines, full of Swedish,Nordic, German, French Hunting champions and International hunting champions. Freja has several ancestors from the famous "Mariebergs" kennel in Sweden and Freddie is out of Kobeddus and de la Meute a Cheops lines, well known throughout Europe.

Freja is used practically at home for underground work and has been tested on badger (Kval 1) and blood tracking (2x 1st prize) in Sweden. Freddie (Fallilou du Sangre Bleu) has been tested throughout Europe (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden) and has the following merits to his name:

SEVCH-Swedish Blood tracking champion
J- Jaktmerit (Hunting Merit)

BhFK/95-DE, BHKF95-IT (100pts), BHP1&2, Fbja (rrCACT), Grytanlagsprov (Kval 1)-SE, Grytapporteringsprov GK-SE, Gryteftersökhund GK, SchwhK/20, SchwhK/40 (CACT), Sfk, Sp (TS), Viltspår (3x1st prize)-SE, Approved for Den test in Denmark (test later this year).

IDS Malmö

As I said, this spring my focus will be on Liina and trying to achieve her Swedish Championship. At the last minute this February, I decided to strip Liina and check her coat to see if we would be participating in anything this spring. To my pleasant surprise, he coat was great and it meant that we could show a bit this spring. So, with 1 day to spare, I signed up for Malmö International Dog Show.

I am happy to report that Liina received the following score:
Jakt (hunting) class: Excellent 1, CK, Best Female 3 with res-CERT and res-CACIB.

Liina with her prizes
Liina's evaluation (translated from Swedish):
Harmonious female. Feminine head with god proportions. Correct bite, excellent neck and overline. Well angulated front and back and well developed body. Could have a little more ground clearance. Fluid movement, excellent coat quality, good temperament.

I was so proud of my little girl and her great performance. The judge was a bit heavy-handed on the table, but we have been training this aspect very, very hard and she handled the situation great. Liina is a bit low, but the comment is likely due to my grooming... I forgot to properly groom her chest (oops!) so it didn't help the ground clearance. In any case, I am pleased with today's results.

We have a show again in about a month and then middle of May. I'm hoping that they will go just as well for my little gal! :D

Liina BOS and Junior BIS-4 in Kjugekull!

I have heard a rumor that there is always rain for the yearly dachshund show in Kjugekull. Last year Baxter was BM2 with CK and CERT and this year it was Liina's turn to shine. Liina and I were up and on the road at 6:30 this morning to join our friend Marianne and her puppy Laura for the taxklub show. It was the biggest club show I have ever been to with 133 dachshunds of all 9 varieties registered! The judges were great and moved along at a relatively good pace despite the adverse weather conditions. The day started and ended with sunshine, but there was quite a lot of rain in between. Regardless, good times, good friends, and good results!

Liina was shown in Junior class as a mini wire (measured today at 32cm) with 2 other female mini wires in the class. The judge loved Liina and awarded her Ex1, CK, Junior BOB! I was over the moon! We then walked for Best female and won! SO exciting!!! Then the heavens opened up and the rain poured down. Both Liina and I looked like drowned rats, but were awarded BOS (best opposite sex). :)

Evaluation Translation " Excellent type, size and proportions. Beautifully well balanced head. Good ears, eyes (though eyes could be a bit darker). Good bite. Very good forebreast and front. Excellent neck and shoulders, good ribcage depth and length. Beautiful back/pelvis and well angled back. Excellent coat quality and excellent movement

To top it all off, we walked today in the Best in Show Junior competition and placed 4th! So proud of my little dog and how well she did today! A little more practice and she will be a superstar. :)

FCI & SKK approved!

So the month of January was a bit hectic. Between coming back from winter holiday, Liina going through her first heat, going back to work, and tracking trials with the dogs, something great happened... my kennel name was officially approved!

The name I have chosen...

So what does it mean? Why chose this name? Well, it wasn't easy. I checked out a variety of different names on FCI, but many were taken or similar to what I loved. I tossed around something German, French, Finnish to represent the dogs, but none felt right. I tried to go back to my Wisconsin roots, but the same. I couldn't choose anything. Then it came to me. What is something common to all of our dogs- multiple names.

Ever since we picked up Fallilou he wasn't Fallilou, he was Freddie. Freddie evolved into Fredster, Freddog, F-dog, Fredrick Baxter McCloud (which, by the way, it where "Baxter" comes from; sadly McCloud and it's variants were taken), Leedrick, and Ledrick- just to name a few.  Barbwired Better than the Rest was a bit of a challenge. We didn't want to "steal" Freddie's name, but we loved Baxter, so that's what we decided on! Baxter's name list is a bit shorter, but he has: Baxi, Bax, Captain Wiggles, Stinkwiggles, and Wiggles. Lastly, our Barbwired Champagne became Liina and she has been Liina-Puti, Puti or LP. Simon is especially excellent at renaming the dogs. Surprisingly, they all respond to all their names, especially Baxter with Wiggles and Liina with Puti. Go figure!

So after checking some ideas on FCI and using my trusty thesaurus, I decided on Moniker.

moniker

 (ˈmɒnɪkəor monicker
n
1. person's name or nickname

It was short, simple, and sweet. Not too far into the alphabet so my dogs wouldn't be shown dead last (in Sweden/Finland, maybe the other Nordics, dogs are shown alphabetically), but also not the very 1st ones either. Right in the middle. I am registered/approved to breed Wirehaired dachshunds in all 3 sizes- Kaninchen, Miniature, and Standard.

The process was surprisingly quick. I sent in my application in September, received an OK from FCI in November, was announced in the December SKK magazine and approved in the middle of January, about 4 months in total. Not too shabby!

Just because I have a kennel name doesn't mean puppies are around the corner. I won't consider breeding Liina until after her litter at Barbwired, so that can be until age 4. Also, Liina is turning into a gorgeous little dog, but her size is currently unclear. She seems to be taking after her daddy quite a bit and although mom in standard, Liina may end up a mini. We will have to see how big she is at 15 months, but she hasn't grown chest or weight-wise since November, so I think she will just be my little girl. No worries about that, but it means that the search for standard bitch to carry my first litter is still out there.

So there it is! A new kennel name and hopefully a bright future awaits!
