For over a year my partner at the time, Simon, and I were discussing getting a dog.
After picking up quite a few breed books, we had narrowed down our
search to just a few breeds. Simon's work colleague was an owner,
breeder, and active exhibitioner of wirehaired dachshunds and suggested
that we visit a local dog show to check out different breeds and perhaps
talk to some of the people there. We wandered the show grounds all day,
enjoying the sights, sounds, and dogs all around us. As the show was
ending, Simon's colleagues asked if we'd like a ride back with them and
to grab a drink at a local pub. In the car, Simon and I shared the back
seat with two wirehaired females- Iiris and Aura- and we were hooked. As
the two girls snuggled up to our laps and snored away, we knew that
this was it. The Dachshund was our breed.
After a few months of searching, it was the same colleague of Simon's
that connected us with our future puppy. Markku (Kennel Barbwired) was
kind enough to get in touch with Caroline Geerts (Kennel Kobeddus), a
fellow breeder and dachshund guru, who informed him of a new litter of
puppies out of her male Kobeddus Effendi just outside Paris. After
seeing the following pictures, we reserved the pup and drove up less
than 1 month later to pick up our new puppy.
Fallilou du Sangre Bleu "Freddie" was one of 5 puppies and a beautiful
chocolate brown color. He slept the whole 6 hour ride from outside of
Paris to Basel and our new dog life began. With Freddie we dove head
first into the involved world of a Dackel owner and Freddie has,
thankfully, been a very willing participant. We actively participate in
obedience trainings, dabble in agility, perform hunting trials, and even
tried our luck at a few shows. I have really come to appreciate the
amazing versatility of the dachshund that I could have never imaged.
After a year with Freddie, we decided to pre-reserve a puppy from our
friends and dackel mentors Markku Varjosalo and Salla Keskitalo of
Kennel Barbwired. In April 2012, the newest member of our family
Barbwired Better than the Rest "Baxter" was born and made the trek from
Finland to Switzerland at the end of May 2012. Baxter is already showing
great promise in appearance as well as tracking and we are looking
forward to working with him in the future.
